Short answer: complete an accredited practical training program, build a signed-off skills logbook, earn First Aid & CPR, and apply to hospitals, clinics or care homes. Most people can do this in about three months on weekends.
1. Meet the entry requirements
Most programs ask for at least 5 credits in SSCE including English, a minimum age of 17 or 18, a valid ID and a real passion for caring for people.
2. Choose a practical program
Look for hands-on lab hours, small class sizes, licensed instructors and a clear assessment system. A good program teaches infection control, vital signs, personal care, safe moving and handling, first aid and CPR, documentation and communication.
3. Build your skills logbook
Employers want proof you can do the work, not just pass a written test. Each skill should be demonstrated correctly several times and signed off by an instructor.
4. Get certified
Finish your exams, First Aid & CPR certificate and transcript. Keep digital copies and make sure your certificate can be verified online.
5. Start applying
Hospitals, clinics, care homes, private home care and school health units all hire Healthcare Assistants. Prepare a clear résumé and practise interview questions.
